These courses introduce the New York State’s Common Core Learning Standards for Mathematics. As we proceed into the 21st century it is important that our students graduate from high school with math skills that are work or college ready. As New York reviewed it graduations rates and how successful students were prepared for work or college after high school, it was apparent that our standards for mathematics were not rigorous enough for students to enter work or college experiences. “For over a decade, research studies of mathematics education in high-performing countries have pointed to the conclusion that the mathematics curriculum in the United States must become substantially more focused and coherent in order to improve mathematics achievement in this country. To deliver on the promise of common standards, the standards must address the problem of a curriculum that is “a mile wide and an inch deep.” These Standards are a substantial answer to that challenge.”
The focus of these online experiences is to deepen your understanding of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) whether you are a beginner or expert. Outcomes for the course are to:
· Understand why New York State has engaged in this work.
· Review the research behind the Common Core State Standards.
· Read the standards and be able to identify what students will need to know and be able to do at each grade level in mathematics.
Understand the major shifts in instruction the NYS Common Core Learning Standards demand in instruction, and what priorities and fluencies will be developed at each grade level.
These courses are six week online courses.
